My mother was the inspiration for the Butterfly Cloth. She loved to watch them flitter around. This cloth looks great in any color, making it a stylish and practical addition to your kitchen or bath essentials. It also makes a great gift for family and friends.



Materials

➤Yarn: 100% Cotton

➤Yardage: 90-110 yds

➤Hook: 5.0 mm


Stitches & Abbreviations

US Terminology

➤ * * = Repeat stitch pattern between * *

➤ Ch# = Chain number of times specified

➤ St/Sts = Stitch/Stitches

➤ SS = Slip Stitch

➤ SK# = Skip number of sts specified

➤ HDC = Half Double Crochet

➤ DC = Double Crochet

➤ BO = Bobble: DC5TOG (Double Crochet 5 TOGether) in same st

➤ SHELL = (5) Double Crochet worked in same sts as decrease)

➤ PICOT = Ch3, SS in 3rd ch from hook


Notes & Special Instructions

➤ Chains at beginning of a round/row NEVER count as a stitch.

➤ I tend to crochet TIGHT, so you may need to adjust your hook size to accommodate.

➤ I suggest using the invisible join for a seamless look when finishing off.




BUTTERFLY DISH / WASH CLOTH PATTERN

NOTES:  

TURN at end of EVERY row.

EVEN rows = RIGHT/FRONT side facing you.

End of row st count will remain the same throughout  (23).

For a tighter weave & smaller cloth, substitute SC for all HDC in this section.

Row 1:

Chainless Foundation HDC 23 sts.

        OR

Chain 24, 1 HDC in 2nd back bump from hook, 1 HDC in each back bump across.

Row 2:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 4 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 3 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st, HDC in each of next 5 sts.

Row 3:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 4:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 3 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 4 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 4 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 4 sts.

Row 5:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 6:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 2 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 7 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 3 sts.

Row 7:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 8:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 3 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 6 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 4 sts.

Row 9:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 10:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 4 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 2 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat 3 more times.  1 HDC in each of next 5 sts.

Row 11:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 12:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 2 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 7 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 3 sts.

Row 13:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 14:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st &  2nd sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 8 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 2 sts.

Row 15:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 16:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 2 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 5 sts, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in each of next 5 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 3 sts.

Row 17:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 18:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 4 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st.  1 HDC in each of next 3 sts, 1 BO in next st.  Repeat again.  1 HDC in next st, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 5 sts.

Row 19:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 20:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 8 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 3 sts, 1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 9 sts.

Row 21:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.

Row 22:

Ch1, 1 HDC in 1st & each of next 6 sts.  1 BO in next st, 1 HDC in each of next 7 sts.  Repeat again.

Row 23:

Ch1, 1 HDC in each st across.


Do NOT fasten off.  Proceed to BORDER Pattern.

BORDER PATTERN

NOTES:  

FRONT/RIGHT side (with Bobbles sticking out) should be facing you at all times.

Do NOT turn at end of each round. 

Each side must have a st count increment of 4 +3.

Rnd 1:

TIP:  Be sure to place same number of SC on both raw edges/sides.


With FRONT/RIGHT side still facing you, rotate work:  Ch1, Evenly place SC down LEFT side.  Ch2 to turn corner.

1 SC in each st across BOTTOM (beginning chain).  Ch2 to turn corner.

Evenly place SC up RIGHT side.  Ch2 to turn corner.

1 SC in each st across TOP.  Ch2 to turn corner.  SS join & do NOT turn.

Rnd 2:

SS to next/2nd st of rnd. Sk1, SHELL in next st, Sk1, SS in next st.  Repeat across.  Sk last st, [Ch1, 6 DC, Ch1] in corner Ch2 space. 

Sk 1st st, SS in next st, Sk1, SHELL in next st, Sk1, SS in next st.  Repeat across.  Sk last st, [Ch1, 6 DC, Ch1] in corner Ch2 space.  Repeat around remaining 2 sides. 


NOTE:  Final SS of repeat will be worked in 1st SS/join of rnd. 


Use invisible join to top of 1st SS/join of rnd.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

How do you make your bobbles? Different designers make them differently but you don't explain how to make them in this pattern.
